Fellowship awarded to support work towards an MD in Medicine at Yale University

DR. SUSAN MATHAI is a physician at the Center for Advanced Lung Disease at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. She cares for interstitial lung diseases and is also the program director for the pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowship program. In addition to patient care, Susan was involved in medical education and clinical research focused on interstitial lung disease.

Susan completed her internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2012. She received her MD from Yale University in 2009 and graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard University in 2005 with a degree in social studies.

While at Harvard University, Susan received grants to support community health work in Boston with Partners in Health and her senior thesis research regarding healthcare in Cuba. Fluent in Spanish and English, Susan conducted research in Cuba, and was involved in activities utilizing her language skills, such as clinical research on reproductive health and clinical translating. While at Harvard University, Susan directed the Mission Hill After School Program, a student-run project serving children in Roxbury.

During medical school, Susan became interested in interstitial lung diseases (ILD), and has been engaged in research and clinical care in this field ever since. She completed fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Colorado, where her NIH-funded research focused on the genetics of ILD. After fellowship, she joined the faculty at the University of Colorado, and more recently moved back to Dallas to help develop the ILD program at Baylor University Medical Center and to raise her three children closer to mother, who immigrated from India in the 1980s, and her sisters who are educators in the Texas public school system.
